The Namesake - by Mira Nair
Cultural assimilation is a specialty for Mira Nair, the India-born, Manhattan-based director who found the right balance in
Mississippi Masala and Monsoon Wedding and soars with her film version of Jhumpa Lahiri's novel The Namesake .
In Calcutta, circa the 1970s, Ashoke (Irrfan Khan) and Ashima (Tabu) agree to an arranged marriage (it was love at first sight with his shoes' - MAde in U.S.A) they start their new lives in Manhattan. It's a struggle... the way every Engineer/ Architect from India has to go through ...The birth of their son, with an odd sounding and tongue twisting name as Gogol Ganguli, intensifies the cultural clash.

Gogul's life turns into tragedy ...after his GF (Max) ditches him on the day - Gogul's Dad's death ceremony ...and later when his wife - Bengali beauty Moushumi (a zesty Zuleikha Robinson) runs away with her french BF (Pierre)
Nair tries to shoehorn too much of a big novel into a small two-hour movie. But her ardor for the material matches her
ambition. This is a generational family saga everyone can relate to, and Nair gives it her special magic.
My Takeaway's from the movie ...
- Respect what your family decides for you ... there is always a reason behind every thing one's parent do for their childern
- Have an ambition in life ... its gives you life when you feel you are dead.
- Dont get fascianted by short term friendships ..worst was his wife ditching him ;( whom should you trust
